Green’s of Whitby wins Seafood Chef of the Year

11/06/2009

A chef making a name for himself as the Rick Stein of the North by promoting mouth watering fresh seafood has won one of the food industry’s most coveted awards.

Seafood Chef of the Year Award went to Rob Green, who runs Green’s of Whitby with wife Emma, at an awards ceremony held in London’s Grosvenor Square by Seafish, the seafood authority.

Created in 2005 as a bi-annual event to recognise excellence and promote sustainable practice across the industry, the awards consistently attract the best in the business.

Seafish Chairman Charles Howeson said: “This has been the most successful Seafood Awards since their inception in 2005, with over 170 entries in the 14 award categories - a testament to the innovation and determination to win that exists in this industry.”

Rob’s meals from quayside to plate can take about 90 minutes. Mr Green, from Northampton, arrived in Whitby 16 years ago to see his sister who had a cafe there. His wife Emma comes from Holderness and was teaching art at Whitby Community College when they met. Months later they had the keys to what had been a pizza parlour. Green’s, a bistro and restaurant, opened in March 2001.
