      <description>With the 6th August fast approaching, deliciouslyorkshire is making a final call for entries into the sixth annual deliciouslyorkshire food and drink awards.

	The prestigious awards recognise and celebrate Yorkshire and Humber’s food and drink elite, showcasing the sector’s fantastic produce and the outstanding achievements within the region.

	New additions to this year’s programme include the Export Award sponsored by UKTI, honouring the best example of a company which is embracing global export markets, and a more interactive online element.

	This year there are nineteen award categories recognising farmshops, meat, poultry and game producers, the most outstanding newcomer and the overall supreme product of 2010 among others.

	An independent panel, chaired by renowned food writer and former chef Elaine Lemm will judge the entries for 2010. Other high profile names on the panel include, BBC Radio 2 Nigel Barden, BBC Great British Menu Star Tim Bilton, Delifresh chef Robert Ramsden, Harvey Nichols head chef Richard Allen and Michelin starred chefs Frances Atkins, Andrew Pern. and Simon Gueller.

	Many previous winners have greatly benefited from their award&#45;win, including Stephen Knox, Managing Director at Yorkshire Dales Meat Company. Stephen comments: “Winning a deliciouslyorkshire award last year certainly helped improve our business. We proudly display our award&#45;winning logo on our sausages and burgers sold in Morrison’s and Asda. Our sales have increased dramatically in the last year, and we have taken on three new staff members, with two more joining us soon.”

	deliciouslyorkshire Chief Executive Jonathan Knight says: “With the deadline fast approaching, we’d like to call for last minute entries from all deliciouslyorkshire members.

	“We have been successfully running these awards for six years now. Our winners have gone on to achieve great things and consider the accolade a real stamp of approval for quality regional produce. I look forward to seeing this year’s entries and watching the winners flourish into 2011.”

	Entry is open exclusively to deliciouslyorkshire members and the winners will be revealed at the prestigious deliciouslyorkshire annual awards dinner on Monday 8 November at Rudding Park, Harrogate.       <title>Weetons Celebrates First Successful Five Years</title>

      <description>A young and dynamic Yorkshire farmer, who also owns Weetons, a contemporary award winning urban farm shop and delicatessen in Harrogate, says it’s time to re&#45;think the way we choose and eat our beef.

	Andrew Loftus is celebrating five years in business next week and he firmly believes that the traditional breeds of beef sold in his shop are great to eat because of the way they are farmed, and the breed of cattle from which they come.

	Andrew says that size isn’t everything when it comes to the best tasting beef, and he only farms a traditional breed called Red Poll, which originated in East Anglia in the 19th Century. They get their name from their luxuriant reddish brown colour, and from the fact that they are Polled, a technical term for cattle which don’t grow horns.

	Andrew has two great passions &#8211; reducing food miles to help the environment, and producing his meat in a way that is kind to the animals and gets the best taste for his customers. Unlike most of the beef from supermarkets which is sent for slaughter from as little as fourteen months of age, these &#8216;steers&#8217; as they are known are at least two years old before they are killed. And they have an entirely natural diet.

	&#8220;They are fattened purely on grass&#8221; Andrew says, of a fine looking group of steers munching away at the grass near Ripon, &#8220;These animals have never had a touch of anything else and they’re about ready to go into the shop.&#8221;

	Andrew Loftus says that turning to a traditional breed like the Red Poll raised some eyebrows amongst his fellow farmers.

	&#8220;They aren’t as big, aren’t as muscly and they don’t grow as quickly as some of the continental breeds that we’re used to, but really it’s all about the quality and flavour of the meat. A lot of the flavour in meat, in any meat, is held in the fat, and when it’s grass finished the fat runs in little veins through the meat and that adds the flavour all the way through.&#8221; This also helps to make the meat more tender when it is cooked.

	&#8220;Here we’re about producing a top quality product which is ethically produced, very welfare friendly so the cows are out at grass as much as they possibly can be, and we get a really premium steak.&#8221;</description>

      <description>Earlier this year, Lynne and Tim from Hostingley Farm entered the Huddersfield Mayor&#8217;s Local Food Awards, and were highly successful!

	They came first in the Local Food Hero category and were highly commended in Local Food Producer – Fresh Produce. A fantastic accolade for the farm.

	Also, the farm has been very busy indeed and had a great morning earlier this month on July 5. Pupils from local primary schools came to visit as part of a project on local food.

      <description>Longley Farm beat off competition from more than 800 entrants to win the prize for best Yorkshire product at the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate.

	Dairy spokesman Konrad Schwoch said it was unusual for the award to be won for an ingredient rather than a consumer product.

	“You cannot drink raw milk before it is treated,” he said.

	“So it says something about the quality of the milk we are producing that the judges chose what is a basic ingredient as the winning product rather than a raspberry ripple ice cream or something!

	“It is phenomenal and quite surprising. But to make good products, you need good raw materials.”

	The milk used in Longley Farm’s products is supplied by its own herd of Jersey cows and those belonging to 25 dedicated Jersey farmers around the country.

	He said the quality of the product was due to several factors.

	“Jersey cows produce fine milk which has very good fat and protein content. It is also low in bacteria, which makes it a very ‘clean’ product.

	“It is also down to the partnership between us and the farmers and the experience and dedication of our employees – several of whom have been with us for 25 years or more.”</description>

      <description>A special feature for Yorkshire Day on Sunday August 1st&#8230; Yorkshire Pudding facts!

	The first known Yorkshire pudding recipe was published in 1737 in The Whole Duty Of A Woman and was called a &#8216;dripping pudding&#8217;.

	Yorkshire pudding can be cooked in a flat tray and is called a &#8216;bed&#8217; of Yorkshire pudding; otherwise it can be served as individual bun&#45;sized puddings.

	Traditionally, when meat was cooked on a spit, the Yorkshire pudding batter was put underneath and fat and meat juice dripped down into it.

	For those families that couldn’t afford crockery, Yorkshire puds acted as a plate and a meal in one!

	Research by the Royal Society of Chemistry concluded that for a Yorkshire pudding to be judged successful it had to be no less than four inches (10cm) in height. It came up with the perfect pudding formula of carbohydrate + H2O + protein + NaCl + lipids (i.e flour, water, egg, milk and fat)!

      <description>West Yorkshire food and cookery business, Curry Cuisine, based in Tingley, Wakefield and Dewsbury, has won two Gold Star ratings for two of its handmade chutneys from the Great Taste Awards, organised by The Guild of Fine Food.

	The country&#8217;s most renowned and robust food awards is the national benchmark employing the most rigorous judging system to ensure the fairest, most accurate and trusted results.

	Newly launched Luxury Mango Chutney scooped a 1 star rating, while the company&#8217;s new Plum Chutney was awarded a 2 star rating.  This is the third year consecutively that the company has been recognised for the quality of its products, having been awarded 1 star in 2009 for its Beetroot Chutney, which led to a listing with Harvey Nichols, Leeds and a 1 star in 2008 for its Yorkshire grown Aubergine Pickle.

	The two chutneys, both traditionally handmade in Yorkshire under Curry Cuisine&#8217;s new &#8216;Chutnee&#8217;s Handmade&#8217; brand, use only the best, fresh ingredients from local farmers within a 50 mile radius. The plum chutney is made with fruit from a Bradford social enterprise business, Springfield Gardens, managed by Bradford District Care Trust since 2002.

	Curry Cuisine&#8217;s Luxury Mango Chutney, infused with saffron and a variety of fresh roasted spices from cumin to cardamon, is set to be listed in local ASDA stores from September, as well as Booths and online at Spices of India.  The award&#45;winning mango chutney is also available at quality food shops, such as Fodder, Harrogate.

	The 2010 Great Taste Awards attracted a record number of entries. In total, 6021 food and drink products were blind&#45;tasted, tested and discussed during two months of intense judging by 350 judges, comprising food writers, chefs, deli and farm shop owners, food producers and buyers.

	Paresh Tejura, operations director, Curry Cuisine said: &#8220;We are absolutely delighted to be among the country&#8217;s most highly rated food products and to be awarded for the third year running. We are proud to be keeping everything in Yorkshire, from sourcing our fresh ingredients bought directly from local farmers to producing our products in our newly opened Yorkshire manufacturing facility in Dewsbury. We are also the only non Rhubarb producer in Yorkshire to be promoting the PDO status of Yorkshire Rhubarb on our Rhubarb Chilli jam labels.&#8221;
