Doncaster’s premier family-run pie maker, The Topping Pie Company, has won two Gold Star ratings from the Great Taste Awards, organised by The Guild of Fine Food. The Great Taste Awards is the national, benchmark food awards employing the country’s most rigorous judging system, ensuring the fairest, most accurate and trusted results.

The company’s traditionally handmade Cranberry Topped Pie and newly launched Chilli Pork Pie were awarded Gold ratings. Roger Topping, managing director of The Topping Pie Company says of their success “We are delighted to be among the country’s most highly rated food products. We are passionate about our products and still hand craft our pies at our Doncaster bakery using only the very best locally sourced, natural ingredients. We are enjoying a good trading period with more and more major multiple and independent retail customers asking for our premium pies and quiches and this prestigious accolade can only add to demand for our award-winning products.”

The 2010 Great Taste Awards attracted a record number of entries. In total, 6021 food and drink products were blind-tasted, tested and discussed during two months of intense judging by 350 judges, comprising food writers, chefs, deli and farm shop owners, food producers and buyers.

One, two and three Gold Stars have been handed out to 1,576 deserving products, from the 1,350 small producers who entered this year. The 95 three Gold Star award winners are in the running for the major, regional and national awards. The 2010 Supreme Champion Trophy winner will be announced at the final at Fortnum & Mason in London on September 6th, where the ultimate three star products will be scrutinised by some of the country’s most revered and feared chefs, food critics and as always, a smattering of celebrity!
